September 26, 2024: God is our Refuge

Weekly Prayer Update

“God is our refuge, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea. . . . The Lord of hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:1–2, 7).

Dear Praying Friends:

Recently, I have been telling people how God has helped me to overcome fear and anxiety.

Last night, in the middle of the night, I had an opportunity to put into practice what I have been learning. Having woken up, and being wide awake, I was greatly troubled by what I have been reading in the news about the economic and financial situation in our country, and the very real threat of nuclear war.

A few days ago, I had asked a friend who knows a great deal about these things, “What are your greatest fears?" Almost without hesitation, he replied, “A hyperinflationary depression, and nuclear war.” Well, his words got my attention, and I was tempted to worry.

So, rather than lying there, I got up, turned on the light, and started reading the Bible. The Psalm for today was Psalm 46. Immediately, I realized that this was God‘s word to me, and I claimed his promises of protection and of his constant presence with us.

God is present with us, and he will provide all that we need, provided that we trust in him. He will never leave us nor forsake us. He will strengthen us, help us, and uphold us with his righteous right hand, as the Scriptures say. He is our good Shepherd, and we shall lack nothing that we need. He will guide us with his Spirit and give our minds wisdom to face any situation.

Comforted by those sure and certain promises in the Bible, I prayed a bit and then went back to sleep.

“There is a river, whose streams make glad the city of God . . . God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved. . . . The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:11).
