CHINESE CHRISTIANITY: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LITERATURE Chinese Christianity has become a major field of study. The following pages contain reviews of more than fifty books, plus some presentations and articles. These publications, though only a small sampling of the extensive—and constantly expanding—body of literature on Chinese Christianity, are representative of many more.

CHINESE CHRISTIANITY IN CONTEXT: HISTORY, CULTURE, SOCIETY This collection of articles and book reviews briefly explores three contexts in which the exponential growth of Christianity in China has occurred: History, Culture, and Society. Composed over a period about fifteen years, they reflect my knowledge at the time of composition and my analysis and evaluation of some important books on these subjects.

THE MISSIONARY MOVEMENT IN CHINA: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LITERATURE This collection contains reviews (which are more like summaries) of books both about missions in general and the missionary movement in China in particular. The general reader can quickly gain a knowledge of the missionary movement in China from these descriptions of important and representative works by experts in the field.

AUGUSTINE: THEOLOGIAN FOR OUR TIME Augustine, one of the great thinkers of all time, is also one of the most influential theologians in the history of Western Christianity. A theological, philosophical, rhetorical, literary, and psychological genius, Augustine has made a major contribution to Western civilization and, in recent centuries, to the entire world. To put it another way, as the cover illustration indicates, Augustine is a major pillar of Christian theology and of Western Civilization.

CARL HENRY: THEOLOGICAL FOR ALL SEASONS (2) This short compilation of articles discusses why Carl Henry’s life and works should be studied by serious theologians and what his far-ranging influence has achieved. It also counters some critiques leveled against his works, especially God, Revelation and Authority, by giving a broad overview of the work and examining the claims against it.

CONFUCIUS AND CHRIST: THE SAGE AND THE SAVIOR Jesus Christ and Confucius (Kongzi) stand at the head of two mighty rivers of thought and practice, each with around one billion followers. This book looks first at what major Christian interpreters have said about Confucius, and the second part will provide a close case study of what the words and deeds of Confucius and Christ have to say about the ideal man.

ZHANG LISHENG: EVANGELIST, APOLOGIST, THEOLOGIAN, PROPHET Some of the precious thoughts of Zhang Lisheng (Lit-sen Chang). His books are most helpful in understanding Western culture, Chinese culture, and how the Bible can help us critique our cultures.

TRUTH AND LIFE: DOCTRINAL AND ETHICAL NOTES ON THE BIBLE PART I: OLD TESTAMENT Truth and Life is not a study Bible or a commentary in the usual sense. This series of doctrinal and ethical notes on the Bible aims to help the ordinary reader discern in the Holy Scriptures what God has said about himself – his nature, will, and ways – and about how we should live in response to his Word.

TRUTH AND LIFE: DOCTRINAL AND ETHICAL NOTES ON THE BIBLE PART II: NEW TESTAMENT We cannot separate doctrine from our proper response to it. That is why this book includes notes both about general truths revealed by God in the Bible and about ways in which we could apply these truths at home, school, work, and church, and in society.

YOUR PART IN GOD'S PLAN: ESSAYS ON EPHESIANS What is God’s plan? It is to bring unity to this broken world. Unity of two types: Unity with God and with other men. The goal of God’s working in history, Paul tells us, is to “bring all things together under one head, even Christ.”

A REAL MAN: A COLLECTION OF DEVOTIONALS FROM TITUS 1:6-9 Everywhere we look, there is a shortage of responsible men. Women, especially, are looking for men who will lead, but with love and gentleness. It is appropriate for us to meditate upon how God describes a real man.

THE WAY HOME: A FAITH FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Surely, there is a worldwide crisis of faith as we begin the 21st century. We are going to think about what sort of faith can give our lives direction, meaning, and hope.

WITH CHRIST IN TIMES OF TRIAL Encouraging and convicting meditations on Scripture and devotions condensed from the 2022-2024 China Institute/Global China Center Weekly Prayer Updates. These short messages help us focus on the truth of God’s Word and the comfort of his presence.

MERCY ALL THE WAY: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY This is my story of God's mercy in my life over the decades, during which his sovereign grace not only saved me from myself but also redeemed the follies of youth and adulthood, over-riding my stupidity, rebelliousness, and sin to manifest his mercy.

MORE PRECIOUS THAN RUBIES: THE WORTH OF A GODLY WOMAN The purpose of this book is simple: To set forth a view of the worth of a woman as depicted in the Bible. Although I shall refer to other books and have appended an extensive list of excellent references at the end, the Scriptures are my main authority.
